Digital Signs for Churches: Reaching Your Congregation and Your Community
Ask most pastors what keeps them up at night and “our sign” won’t be the first answer. But a church’s sign is often the hardest-working member of the ministry. It greets every visitor, announces every service time, and speaks to the thousands of people who drive past but never walk in. For a growing number of congregations across Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia, that sign has gone digital, and for good reason.
An electronic message center (EMC), sometimes called a digital church sign, replaces the old manual-letter marquee with a full-color LED display you can update in seconds. No more sliding plastic letters onto a board in the rain. No more outdated messages left up for weeks because nobody had time to change them. Just a bright, clear display that can carry a different message for every service, every event, and every season.
Why Churches Are Moving to Electronic Signs
Churches have a few needs that a good digital sign meets better than almost any other tool.
The first is simply communication. A congregation’s calendar is full: Sunday services, midweek studies, youth nights, community outreach, holiday programs. A digital sign for your church lets you promote all of it from one display and change the schedule as often as you like without paying anyone to climb a ladder.
The second is reach beyond your walls. Your building already sits on a road where cars pass every day. An outdoor digital sign turns that traffic into an audience, welcoming newcomers, sharing an encouraging word, and reminding the community that your doors are open. It’s a 24/7 outreach tool working even when the building is empty.
The third is stewardship. Church budgets are careful budgets, and a sign is a long-term investment. The right EMC should still look sharp and run efficiently ten years from now, which is why the manufacturer behind the display matters as much as the display itself.
Our Partnership With Vantage LED
At Ortwein Sign, we build and install EMCs using displays from our manufacturing partner, Vantage LED. We chose Vantage because their approach lines up with how we think about signage: not the cheapest box on day one, but the best long-term value over the life of the sign. For churches specifically, a few of their features stand out.
Custom content, done for you. Most churches don’t have a graphic designer on staff. Vantage includes a year of professional custom content creation, a service they value at over $15,000, so your sign looks polished from the very first Sunday instead of relying on whoever happens to be comfortable with the software. You can also use their built-in image tools to create and save new graphics in seconds, whether that’s fall leaves around a Trunk-or-Treat announcement or a banner for the Christmas Eve service.
Update it from anywhere. Vantage runs on cloud-based software, so an authorized volunteer or staff member can change your message from a laptop or phone, whether that’s from the church office, from home, or on the road. If you want to understand how that works, we wrote a whole piece on cloud-based signage and why it beats being tethered to one on-site computer.
Emergency and safety alerts. This is one many congregations don’t expect. Vantage was an early partner with FEMA to display emergency, weather, and AMBER alerts automatically through the national IPAWS system, and their Critical Mass alerts can push safety messages to your display on demand. For a church that also runs a school, a daycare, or a community shelter, a highly visible sign that can double as a safety tool is a real asset.
A warranty built for the long haul. When you purchase a digital message center from us, it comes backed by a 7-year warranty, well beyond the one-to-five-year, parts-only coverage common in the industry. That’s peace of mind for a purchase you expect to serve your congregation for a decade or more. Every display we install is built to industry standards, including UL Listing and FCC compliance, for safe, reliable operation.
We Won’t Sell You a Sign Your Congregation Can’t Read

A digital sign only works if people can actually read it. The right size and pixel pitch depend on how far away your viewers are, how fast they’re driving, and what your local ordinances allow, and it’s the step where churches most often get burned by a low bid. One of our Chattanooga church clients put it well:
“My church was considering a message center and reached out to several sign companies. Most vendors quoted based on budget. Ortwein took a different approach — their quote was higher, but they didn’t just sell us a sign, they educated our leaders. They brought out a truck with the actual message centers other vendors had quoted so we could see how those signs would perform at real driving speeds. It was clear the other signs were too small to be effective — possibly even unsafe. Ortwein refused to sell a sign that wouldn’t work, regardless of budget. Their integrity and expertise made all the difference.”
— Terry Massey, Chattanooga
When a project calls for it, we can demo actual displays on-site so there are no surprises once it’s installed. You can read more about how to choose the right message center in our earlier blog post.
Already Have a Marquee? You May Be Able to Upgrade
If your church still runs an interchangeable-letter readerboard, you don’t necessarily have to start from scratch. In many cases we can check local codes and, where permitted, adapt your existing pole or monument sign, or build a new base, to carry a modern LED display. It’s often a faster, more affordable path to dynamic messaging than a full replacement.
Turn-Key, From Design to Install
With more than 20 denominations served and decades of experience, our in-house design team handles the whole process, including design, permitting, fabrication, installation, and content, so your team isn’t left coordinating multiple vendors. From our offices in Nashville and Chattanooga and our representative in Birmingham, Alabama, we serve churches throughout Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia, and we know the local sign codes that can make or break a project.
If your church is considering a new digital sign, or replacing an aging marquee, we’d love to help you get it right. Contact Ortwein Sign for a free consultation and site evaluation, and let’s find the display that reaches your congregation, and your community, for years to come.
